How to override numerical pager in Drupal 5.x to be alphabetical?

I am using Drupal 5.19 and Ubercart catalog to display a product catalog. This catalog displays products by creating product node types and then sorts them in to catalog sections using taxonomy. When there are a lot of products in one section Drupal’s pager kicks in showing a numerical pager. What I would like to do is override this and create an alphabetical pager.

I have read a lot of information on Drupal and other sites on the web and the popular suggestion seems to be to use views to obtain an alph pager. However, as I have done quite a bit of work with the Ubercart catalog module I don’t really want to start tring to recreate a catalog effect with views.

I figure that the pager can be overriden in template.php but now need to figure out how to get it to sort the catalog taxonomy view in to pages alphabetically and to then show letters in the pager. Not an easy task I know but I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks,
Matthew :)
